FISHING REPORT
wednesday September 30th, zoom! Another month gone just like that!!! But a good fishing month it was. I have posted some pics of the recent catches that have been brought into the shop at the bottom of the report.
of course salmon top the charts. Coho as well as kings are being caught up and down the chicago lakefront and beyond. i have gotten recent reports that they are starting to hit good up north like racine and kenosha. Water temps are still in the mid 60’s here which leads me to believe we still have a good run for at least a few more weeks. I also think more kings will be showing up as the water temps continue to drop. All the usual lures and crankbaits are working as well as baits like large shiners, spawn sacs, shrimp, etc…on slip bobber rigs and bottom rigs. Fish from sundown to about 9am. I have seen a lot of fish caught from just after sunrise till about 9am on anything shiny with orange, blue or chartreuse.
i usually Don’t recommend powerline fishing in the fall because it is usually kings being caught but with the amount of coho that are out here this fall powerlining isn’t a bad idea. You just have to change it up from how you do it in the spring. I don’t recommend shooting it out unless you shoot close. One reason is there is still boat traffic the other is they are closer to the shore. I Recommend to throw it out by hand. This requires a different weight, less rubber, less hooks and no floats. Use large shiners, spawn sacs, shrimp, crawlers, etc….
smallmouth action still good in and around the harbors. In fact we weighed one caught on a powerline that was 21” and just under 5lbs. Good baits have been large shiners, leeches and night crawlers.
there has been a report of a perch here and there but nothing to really get excited about. It is salmon season so most everyone is fishing for them. Should be more to report on perch come the middle of november. Which will be here in the blink of an eye.
i have not gotten a chicago river report but it always has some sort of activity.
the cook county forest preserve fall trout season opens october 17th at 5am.
snagging season opens tomorrow thursday october 1st and runs through december 31st and can only legally be done in 4 locations.
1. lincoln park lagoon from the fullerton bridge to the southern end of the lagoon.
2. waukegan harbor (north basin only).
3. Winnetka power plant discharge area.
4. Jackson harbor inner and outer harbors.
